Welcome to Dietetics
What does a Dietitian do?
As Dietitians we have studied the science of food and nutrition and are the best people to advise you on how to eat to stay healthy. If you have diabetes or heart disease, we can explain how to choose foods which can help you to control your condition. We can give you individual advice if you need to lose weight, or, if you have lost weight because you have been ill or are having difficulty eating, we can help you to get the nutrition you need to get well again.
Some of us have trained in specialist areas, e.g. babies and children, food allergies or complex diseases needing special diets. We also teach, run group sessions and promote healthy eating.
Where do we work?
We work in your local hospital, clinics and health centre, and sometimes at your home. If there are other Doctors, Nurses and professional people looking after your health, we work with them to try and give you the best possible treatment and care.
If you would like to know more about what Dietitians do, including the differences between Dietitians and Nutritionists, please take a look at this helpful guide.
