Medical and Dental Education

Medical & dental education at University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust

University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust is a large organisation covering a geographical area of 1,000 square miles. We serve a resident population of 310,000 and a catchment population of about 350,000. The area has 17 million visitors a year, mainly to the south Lakeland area.

The Trust has a keen interest and deep involvement in medical and dental education at both undergraduate and post graduate levels. The driving force behind this enthusiasm is the potential to recruit locally, train locally and retain locally. The prospect of 'growing our own' future local medical and dental workforce is a key driver for the Trust.

Each of our hospitals offers excellent educational and clinical experience for Foundation doctors. They are modern, well equipped and friendly places to work and the clinical staff have a keen interest in the teaching and welfare of junior doctors.

Undergraduate medical and dental education is delivered in conjunction with Lancaster Medical School and the Cumbria and Lancashire Consortium which was formed to develop local medical and dental undergraduate education.

There is a Foundation Year 1 Tutor and Clinical Tutor at both Lancaster and Furness hospitals. There are Education Centre Managers at Furness General Hospital and at Royal Lancaster Infirmary.

Post graduate medical and dental education is governed by the North Western Deanery.
