Furness General Hospital (FGH) has a range of 'General Hospital' services, including a full Accident & Emergency Department, Critical Care unit and Consultant led beds.

FGH also provides a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day-case and inpatient surgery.

Walking route:

Arriving by Road

From Barrow: Follow signs to Dalton along Abbey Road. The hospital is opposite Furness House Hotel on Dalton Lane.

From Dalton: From Abbey Road junction with Park Road, continue onto Barrow Road and turn right opposite Furness House Hotel onto Dalton Lane.

From the north/A590: The hospital is signposted from the A590 onto Park Road before turning right onto Barrow Road for 500 yards then right onto Dalton Lane.

Car Parking

Designated parking for people with blue badges exists in front of all the main entrances and close to the entrance and exit of the main pay and display car park. Drivers with blue badges utilising these spaces are not required to pay.

There are also limited 20 minute short stay parking spaces in front of entrances. Please note that the pay and display machines only take coins, not notes or debit/credit cards. Enquiries concerning parking can be directed to the General Office, Monday to Friday during office hours, to the car park patrol staff or via the switchboard at all other times.

The Pay and Display machines don’t give change; however change is available from the general office between 8.30am - 4.30pm.

Whenever possible people attending the site for whatever reason are asked to consider and, use public transport.


There is a cycle rack located at the Main Entrance and next to the Maternity department.


The Trust meets regularly with members of groups which represent people with disabilities.

Personal listening devices for people with a hearing impairment are available at most clinic reception areas. These areas display the standard RNID purple notice.

Travel expenses

The General Offices at each of our main hospitals are able to process the reimbursement of travel costs on presentation of proof of income related benefit and your appointment letter/card.

FGH Catering

The food served in our restaurants is homemade and locally sourced.

Restaurant Opening Times (situated on Level Three):

Staff and visitor restaurant 8.00am – 7.00pm

Hot and cold snacks available all day.

Breakfast 8am – 11.15am / Lunch served 11.45 – 1.45pm / Supper served 5.15–7.15pm

Saturday and Sunday 7.00pm close.


Open 7 days a week (9am – 7.30pm Mon–Fri/1.30 – 7.30pm Sat/Sun 2 – 7pm) selling a range of items from newspapers, cards, confectionary and snacks to cold drinks and gifts.

WRVS Tea Bars

Open 9am - 4pm Monday-Friday selling a range of hot beverages and snacks.

There is also a small tea bar in the Physiotherapy Rehab Area open Monday/Tuesday 9am – 11.30am and 1.30 – 4.00pm.

WRVS Ward Trolleys

Visiting ward areas every afternoon from Monday-Friday selling sweets, drinks and toiletries.

WRVS Library Service

Operating Monday/Wednesday/Friday afternoon to ward areas.

FGH General Office

Opening hours: Monday to Thursday 8.30 - 17.00 Friday 8.30 - 16.30

Changing places facilities 

Open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
