Our Communication Matters in Maternity at Morecambe Bay project

Earlier this year we secured £65,000 in funding from NHS England for an innovative new project which will use patient feedback to help us make improvements across our Maternity Services.
 
We were successful in our bid for funding from the Maternity Experience Challenge Fund. The fund was created by NHS England at the request of Ben Gummer, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Health whose portfolio includes improvement initiatives such as the NHS ‘Friends and Family Test’ and other insight work which involves patient feedback.
 
Just one of three trusts across the country were awarded funding from the Maternity Experience Challenge Fund, and we have used the money to develop an innovative training package for NHS staff describing how communication, both good and bad, impacts on those women and families that use our services. This training package was  developed through patient feedback and the involvement of families, real stories and experiences.
 
This project will develop a much more intense and radical approach to addressing negative patient experience, and will help us develop cultural change in communication across Maternity Services at Morecambe Bay and it will make an important contribution to our ongoing work to put women and their families at the centre of care by listening to their feedback.
 
This pilot programme will help healthcare workers go even further to use patient feedback in innovative ways to improve maternity care.
 
The training package we are developing includes a video for maternity staff which illustrates parent emotions and feelings, and describes how communication styles impact upon the experience and outcomes of those that use our services. This powerful teaching video will form the basis of an intense multi-disciplinary communication training plan aimed at current and all new staff. We hope it will encourage staff to reflect on how their current practice and make them aware of the impact of communication - good and bad - on women and their families.
 
By including some real life experiences and stories, we hope that this will help make the subject more authentic and real for those undertaking the training. It will also provide a voice to those affected and a sense of involvement in the cultural changes being made across our Trust as a result.
 
We will also run a series of training workshops for both clinical and practice educators so that they continue to develop communication skills amongst staff.
 
This is a really exciting opportunity for the Trust, and we were particularly pleased to receive feedback from the NHS England and the Department of Health teams who  said this project will make a huge difference to mums, babies and their families across Morecambe Bay
