Antenatal Classes

Antenatal classes are designed to help you and your chosen birth partner prepare for childbirth and early parenthood.

The classes include information on:

  • Looking after yourself during pregnancy, including a session with a physiotherapist
  • Preparing to meet your baby - what to expect and how to cope
  • Practical advice on caring for and feeding your new baby
  • Breast feeding workshop
  • Advice on early parenting - coping strategies and bonding with your baby

There are a variety of sessions available across the Morecambe Bay area, including individual sessions or weekly courses.

Your midwife will discuss the options with you and advise you on how to book onto the classes you want to participate in. Some of the sessions available include:


Early Bird Drop-in Sessions

Women and partners can attend these sessions as early in pregnancy as they wish. Topics covered include:

  • Navigating your handheld notes
  • Emotional and physical changes in pregnancy
  • Important symptoms and contact numbers
  • Baby’s development
  • Connecting with your baby in pregnancy
  • Nutrition and exercise
  • Local pregnancy groups

Due to the changes to Children's Centres in the Lancaster area, we are currently trying to find a new venue for these sessions. We will update this page when the next dates are available.


Birth Choices
Drop-in Sessions
Women and partners can attend these sessions from 32 weeks pregnancy onwards. Topics covered include:

  • Preparing your birth preferences
  • Birth place choices
  • Signs of labour and contact numbers
  • Staying active
  • Coping techniques
  • Pain relief options
  • Greeting your baby and skin to skin contact
  • Feeding, connecting and responding to baby 

Due to the changes to Children's Centres in the Lancaster area, we are currently trying to find a new venue for these sessions. We will update this page when the next dates are available. 


Bump, Birth and Beyond

These sessions are held monthly in both Lancaster and Morecambe and comprise of three sessions over three weeks:

  • Session 1: Midwife led and looks at the ‘Physiology of labour and birth’
  • Session 2: Health visitor led and looks at ‘Infant feeding and how the health visitor supports you and your family after baby arrives’
  • Session 3: Children centre staff led and looks at ‘Life with a newborn, keeping you all safe at home’

Breastfeeding workshops
If you need any advice or help with breastfeeding, come along to one of our breastfeeding workshops. 

These sessions take place at Lune Park Children's Centre, Owen Rd, Lancaster, LA1 2LN, from 2pm - 4pm on 8 August, 12 September, 10 October, 14 November and 12 December.


Aqua-Natal sessions
There are also Aqua-Natal classes available throughout the Morecambe Bay area. Aqua-Natal exercise is safe, gentle and ideal for pregnant and post-natal women. The sessions that take place in Morecambe Bay are:

  • Dalton Leisure Centre - Dalton in Furness
    Tuesdays (women only): 8pm - 8.45pm
    Wednesday (women and partners): 8pm - 8.45pm

Antenatal Exercise, Massage for Labour and Birthing Positions

These drop in sessions are for mothers-to-be at any stage in pregnancy and are led by an obstetric physiotherapist. Come along to learn about:

  • Exercise in Pregnancy
  • Pelvic floor exercise
  • Back care in pregnancy
  • Massage for labour
  • Positions for labour and birth

There's no need to book - just come along with your birthing partner to one of the sessions. These sessions take place the in the Children's Outpatient Waiting Room, Third Floor, Women's Unit, Royal Lancaster Infirmary, LA1 4RP, from 6pm - 8pm, on the first Monday of every month.
