Support for Bereaved parents

Supporting you if you sadly lose your baby

Having a baby should the most exciting time in your life.

Unfortunately, a distressing and upsetting reality of life is that in a small number of cases, a baby sadly dies during pregnancy, birth, or as a new born.

Our team at Morecambe Bay are committed to supporting anyone who has suffered the loss of a baby in pregnancy or following delivery.

In tragic situations such as this, everyone’s needs are very different so we will work with families to provide sensitive and compassionate care that is tailored to what they need - individually, and as a family.

At Morecambe Bay we have two Bereavements Midwives - Becky and Celia - who will support you and your family from your initial loss, throughout your time in hospital, and when you return home.

Along with their midwife colleagues, Becky and Celia aim to guide you and your family at the start of your bereavement journey with compassion, kindness, respect, dignity, and honesty.

They will also assist you and your family to spend time with your baby to create lasting memories, should you wish to.

Becky and Celia are an essential point of contact for families during this difficult, painful and emotional time. They provide a compassionate link between you and bereavement services, including supporting you and your family to organise funerals and register deaths.

They will also signpost you and your family for ongoing support and counselling services, if appropriate.

Becky and Celia also help other maternity staff by providing support and guidance to them to ensure they are updated with current guidelines and teaching practices. This work enables us to offer gold standard care to all women and their families.

Remembrance services are held in Lancaster and Barrow each year for anyone who has lost a baby.

In Barrow, they are held at the hospital chapel on the first Wednesday in December at 7.00pm.

In Lancaster, the services are held at St Thomas Church on the last Sunday in November at 2.00pm.
