Foundation Training Programme

The Trust provides a comprehensive two year Foundation training programme, which is broken down into six four month placements. The tracks are linked and are recruited to for the full two years via the national Foundation Programme, based either at Lancaster or Barrow for the full two years (http://www.foundationprogramme.nhs.uk/pages/home).

There are 39 Foundation posts available across the Trust each year, three of which form an Academic Foundation track and are recruited to separately. For more information please click on the following links:

Academic Foundation Jobs and Track Description

Following the national recruitment process, all successfully matched candidates will be required to attend a Pre-Employment Competency Screening day.

We offer a comprehensive shadowing and induction programme the two weeks before the Foundation programme starts. This provides you with an opportunity to familiarise yourself with your new working environment and get to know your colleagues better, whilst undertaking mandatory training. This programme is designed to ease you comfortably into the working life of our Trust and resolve any issues prior to your first working day.

There will also be a departmental induction programme which will address day to day aspects such as leave, sickness reporting, study leave, rotas, policies and procedures.

Foundation Years

Each Foundation Year 1 (FY1) year track includes at least four months in General Medicine, four months in General Surgery or Orthopaedics and one further four month post. This enables the required clinical experience for Foundation doctors to achieve full registration with the GMC at the end of FY1.

The Foundation Year 2 (FY2) offers rotations across a variety of specialities including Anaesthetics, Intensive Care, Pathology, Emergency Medicine, Psychiatry, Obstetrics and Gynaecology as well as Medical and Surgical options. All tracks include General Practice.

All Foundation trainees within the Trust receive protected ‘bleep-free’ teaching sessions.

The Foundation Programme is supported by a dedicated team of staff.

There is a FY1 Programme Director at both the RLI (Mr Colin Cutting) and FGH (Mr Sanjay Sinha).

There is also a FY2 Programme Director at both sites  RLI  (Dr Corinne Rimmer)  and  FGH (Mr Rahul Kakkar).
