GP ST Programmes

GP ST Programmes

GP ST Programmes are recruited to nationally via the Royal College of General Practitioners. There are two programmes based at the Trust. One is based around South Cumbria and the other based around Lancaster.

The programmes consist of three six month posts in a hospital; a six month GP Plus training post and a twelve month placement as an ST3 in a GP Practice. For further information about the training programme please go to https://gprecruitment.hee.nhs.uk/

GP Speciality Training programmes in Hospital placements include: Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Psychiatry, Accident & Emergency, Medicine, Care of the Elderly. GP Plus Training Posts in General Practice include placements in:  Palliative Care, Accident & Emergency, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Paediatrics.

The programme will prepare you for your working life as a GP with lots of opportunities to develop your skills in a more modern, patient focussed NHS in North Lancashire and South Cumbria.

The schemes have smaller numbers allowing a personal approach to learning and education, coupled with an excellent record in assisting our trainees to pass the MRCGP.

Many of our Practices are often asked to assist in cases where intensive support is needed for a trainee to complete their final assessments, an endorsement of our skills, patience and persistence. General Practices’ are expanding now to provide additional training capacity to accommodate the possible future expansion to GP training.  We run regular sessions for our trainers and know the value of leading by example.  Our trainers give the level of commitment we expect from our trainees.

The programme will give great prospects for career development as a partner, a salaried GP or a GP with portfolio working in multiple settings such as the Hospital or University.

Trainee Reflections

Many of our trainees like to share their experiences of what it's like being part of UHMBT using written reflections. See their reflections here.
