Furness General Hospital celebrates 40 years of care

Posted on: 30 April 2025

Colleagues across Furness General Hospital are gearing up to celebrate the 40th anniversary of it opening with a day of festivities that reflect four decades of dedication, care and connection with the local community.

In May 1985 Her Majesty the Queen officially opened what was the brand new Furness General Hospital  - and on Friday May 23 colleagues, patients and visitors will join in marking this significant milestone with a birthday party. The event will include a visit from Dr. Geoff Jolliffe, the High Sheriff of Cumbria who will cut the anniversary cake and join in the festivities.

Adding to the fun, Radio Lonsdale will broadcast a special 1980s-themed show and the hospital catering team will roll back the clock with a retro 80s menu. Colleagues are also encouraged to decorate suitable work spaces for more local birthday parties.

As part of the celebrations former colleagues and local residents are invited to share their memories and photographs of hospital from over the years. Whether it’s a story as a patient, a special thank you to a colleague or snapshots from the past, they will be displayed on the day to celebrate the community’s connection to the hospital. Submissions can be sent to communications.team@mbht.nhs.uk by Friday 9th May 2025.

Physical photographs are also welcome—please ensure your name and return address are clearly marked on the back if you would like them returned after the event. Please send them to Charity Office, Furness General Hospital, Dalton Lane, LA14 4LF

Aaron Cummins, Chief Executive, UHMBT, said "The hospital has been at the heart of this community for 40 years and will continue to be for many years to come. This celebration is not only about looking back at all we've achieved together, but also looking forward to the opportunities that are ahead for FGH and our local health services. I hope that colleagues and our community will join us in celebrating this special milestone."

A special membership talk will also be held on 29th May 2025 - to look forward to the next 40 years at the hospital with a sneak peek of what might be to come in the future.
