This Friday (23 May 2025), members of the public are warmly invited to Furness General Hospital (FGH) as we mark 40 years of caring for our community.

To help celebrate four decades of care, compassion and community at FGH, the Trust would like to welcome current and former colleagues, patients, partners, and members of the public to come and join teams from across the hospital for a special birthday party.

The celebration event will take place from 11am to 1pm in the Conference Room (next to the restaurant) at FGH, with a special birthday party to honour the anniversary. There’ll be something for everyone to enjoy, including:

  • A showcase marketplace featuring colleagues and partners

  • A special 1980s-themed Radio Lonsdale show and restaurant menu

  • Displays celebrating the hospital’s history and future

  • Fun activities for colleagues, patients and visitors

  • Chances to support fundraising for FGH services

The event will feature a number of special guests, including Dr Geoff Jolliffe, Barrow GP and The High Sheriff of Cumbria; and Councillor Judith McEwan, the Mayor of Barrow, who will be joining teams at the hospital mark this important milestone.

Tony Oakman, Interim Chair, UMBHT, said: "40 years is quite the milestone! I just want to thank all colleagues - past and present - for their dedication and hard work. I hope members of our local community are able to find time to come to celebrate all things FGH with us on the day; and if you do make your way down to the restaurant, please come and say hello."
