We have launched our 2025/26 winter health communications campaign, aimed at helping people stay well, access the right care and reduce pressure on urgent and emergency services during the colder months.

Winter is traditionally the busiest period for local health and care services, with increases in respiratory illnesses, slips and falls and demand for urgent and emergency care. This year’s campaign focuses on practical steps people can take to look after themselves and their families, support their wellbeing and know where to go for help when they need it.

A key part of the campaign is encouraging people to use NHS 111 online for urgent but non-life-threatening health needs. The service is available 24/7 and can quickly direct people to the most appropriate care — including pharmacies, GPs, urgent treatment centres or a call-back from a clinician.

It also highlights the expanded NHS 111 ‘Select Mental Health’ option, which gives anyone experiencing a mental health crisis direct access to local specialist support by selecting Option 2 when calling 111. The line is staffed by mental health professionals and is available around the clock.

Alongside this, we are supporting the national drive to increase uptake of flu, COVID-19 and RSV vaccinations, which remain the best defence against serious illness and hospitalisation during winter. Eligible people are encouraged to book their vaccinations through the NHS App, the National Booking Service or their local pharmacy.

This forms part of a wider effort across Lancashire and South Cumbria to help communities stay well this winter, with advice on keeping warm, looking out for neighbours, using Pharmacy First and taking simple steps to prevent illness.

More information on how to stay well this winter, including local pharmacy opening times, support services and health advice, will be shared throughout the coming weeks.
