Professional Midwifery Advocates

Here at University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust we have a team of Professional Midwifery Advocates (PMA).

The team are coordinated by Quality Matron and Lead PMA,

The role of the PMA is to support and empower midwives to ensure you get the right care and your needs are met. The PMA works with Midwives, Student Midwives and all other members of the multi-disciplinary maternity team.

The PMA will support the midwifery team to provide the highest standards of care at all times. The principles of Normative, Formative and Restorative supervision are adopted leading to Continuous Quality Improvement.

Normative supervision includes an in-depth knowledge of our day to day practice via processes such as audit, guideline review and receiving feedback from service users. We work in close liaison with our local Maternity Voices Partnership to ensure our services meet the demands of our local families.

Formative supervision links the role of the Lead PMA to the education team to ensure that all staff have the training they require to provide safe care to you and your family.

Restorative supervision gives the opportunity for all midwives and members of the multi-disciplinary team to have regular restorative sessions proven to benefit practitioners working in stressful environments.

In this capacity the Lead PMA also coordinates our ‘listen with mother’ service which involves giving the opportunity to women and families to have a discussion following episodes of care to gain a greater understanding of how and why care was delivered as it was.

For those wishing for care outside of local and national guidelines the PMA can be a useful link too in advocating both for women families and staff.
