Screening and Appointments

Screening appointments

If you are between 50 and 70 years old you will receive an appointment once every three years, inviting you to have a breast screening mammogram. We invite around 30,000 women per year for screening inNorth Lancashire and South Cumbria. You do not have to contact us to make an appointment, we will ensure that you receive your invitation at the appropriate time. If you do not automatically receive an invitation and you are between these ages please contact the unit to make an appointment.

Age extension has commenced in the North Lancashire and South Cumbria area. This means that we have begun to invite random sample's of women from 47-49 years of age and 71-73 years of age in addition to women aged 50-70. Age extension will happen over a period of time and will eventually mean that all women receive their first invitation before their 50th birthday. Please see our leaflet in the publications section or visit the NHS Cancer Screening website for more details.

If you would like to know whether you will be invited soon you can look at the screening schedule. If it has been over four years since your last breast screening appointment then please contact us.

We have a range of different locations where you can be screened and a range of appointment dates and times. We try to invite you to a screening clinic that is convenient for most women in your GP practice but we appreciate that this may not always suit you.

When you receive your invitation letter you will see that we have already allocated you a specific screening location, appointment date and time. If you find this appointment inconvenient then please complete the appointment request form to request an alternative location, date or time.

Request an appointment (over 70s)

If you are over 70 and have not been screened for over 3 years you are also welcome to contact our office on 01524 583050.

Where we screen

2018-05-14 16_19_44-Inbox - ailsa.martin@mbht.nhs.uk - Microsoft Outlook.pngScreening for Lancaster and Morecambe women takes place at our static unit at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary. We also have static breast screening sites at Furness General, Barrow-In-Furness and Westmorland General, Kendal. Since December 2011 we started to screen inside Whitegate Drive Health Centre, Blackpool. However this is only open at certain periods through out the year.

Mammography for Preston, Blackpool, Poulton and Fleetwood women is performed on the mobile screening unit. The mobile unit moves around staying at each site for a few months as indicated in the list of screening locations below. You will normally be invited to a location within the area of your GP’s surgery. If your invitation is not at a convenient location then please let us know and we can arrange an appointment to any convenient location where we are currently screening. Just complete the change your appointment form and we will rearrange it for you.

How to find us

How women are invited for breast screening

The North Lancashire and South Cumbria Breast Screening Service invites approximately 65,000 women per year for screening. Screening is organised according to your GP practice in all boroughs (CCGs). Once every three years your GP practice will be contacted and all women eligible for screening will be invited. Not every woman will receive an appointment as soon as she is 50. You will receive your first appointment before your 53rd birthday and therefore there is no need to contact us for an appointment.

Women over the age of 70 are encouraged to continue with breast screening but must contact the screening office once every three years for an appointment.
